Barry Manilow Helps Clark County School Musicians

Legendary singer-songwriter Barry Manilow's non-profit organization, the Manilow Music Project, will put musical instruments into the hands of Clark County School District middle and high school students beginning with a major donation this Fall. Beginning August 18, fans who bring a new or gently used musical instrument to the Paris Théâtre box office will receive a voucher for the performance date of their choice. The Manilow Music Project (MMP) is part of The Manilow Fund for Health and Hope and was formed in response to the needs of public schools and their severely depleted music programs, and works towards highlighting these programs. Additionally, MMP aids these programs in the form of donations of instruments and materials to further music education around the country.The Manilow Music Project is also funded by the Manilow Paris Platinum Experience Tickets, which are sold at all performances. The Platinum Experience Ticket includes a front row seat, pre-show champagne reception, meet & greet and photo with Barry Manilow, and an autographed show program. Give Back to an American Hero

Saturday September 18 a benefit for PFC Michael Araujo will be held at Motorcycle Trike Toys, 470 Boulder Highway in Henderson. Michaels was critically injured in Afghanistan on October 16, 2009 in a roadside bomb attack. He is an amputee and has had several surgeries in an effort to control infection. Michael is one of America's heroes and needs out help.Activities on the 18 include a morning ride at 9AM followed by live and entrainment at 1PM with food and drinks available as well as raffle prizes. BBQ Battle for Southern Nevada Children First

On September 18, 2010, SNCF is  hosting its 2nd Annual BBQ Battle. This high energy competition will be held at Nevada Partners Culinary Training Academy located at 710 W. Lake Mead Blvd from 11am-3pm. This year’s fundraiser will be hosted by comedian Sweet Lou Collins and feature some of the best barbeque restaurants and chefs in the Las Vegas Valley.The event benefits  Southern Nevada Children First (SNCF), is a local  non-profit organization, that provides long- term transitional living and life skills training to homeless pregnant and parenting teens and young adults, ages 16-22. President of the LV Chamber of Commerce Speaks at Faith Luth

Matthew T. Crosson, president of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, will be the featured speaker at Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School’s Business Advisory Council (BAC) breakfast on September 21, 2010 from 8:00am – 9:30am. Mr. Crosson was recently appointed as president and CEO of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, the largest and most influential business organization in the state of Nevada. The event will be held at Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School’s Kalb Student Center, located inside the school’s campus at 2015 S. Hualapai Way. The event is free for Business Advisory Council members and $10 for the general public.

Greek Food Festival

Las Vegas' 38th Annual Greek Food Festival sponsored by ST. John Greek Orthdox Church runs Friday, September 24th, 3pm-11pm, Saturday, September 25, 3pm-11pm, Sunday, September 26th, Noon-10pm on the beautiful Church grounds, 5300 El Camino Rd., corner of Jones and Hacienda. Shop A Doc

Saturday October 2 St. Rose Dominican Hospitals 8280 West Warm Springs Road, is hosting a free “Shop A Doc” event for women who are looking for OB/GYNs. Potential patients are provided a forum for fast, informal, face-to-face interviews with several private practice OB/GYNS. Women will be able to gather the important information they need to choose a doctor for prenatal, peri- or post-menopausal management or general gynecological healthcare needs. For those not sure what type of questions should be asked, a list of questions will be provided as a guide. Representatives from the Barbara Greenspun Women's Care Centers of Excellence will be on hand to provide activities, women’s health and prenatal information. Eat Drink and Make A Difference

The Women’s Club of Summerlin, Inc., a local non-profit organization engaged in philanthropic endeavors to help the women and children of Clark County, will hold its 15th annual charity luncheon, “Eat, Drink and Make a Difference”, on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the J.W. Marriott Resort & Spa in Summerlin.  Baby’s Bounty, a local 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, will be the recipient of the Women’s Club of Summerlin fundraising efforts this year. >Baby’s Bounty is the only non-profit in Clark County whose primary purpose is to provide a safe sleep environment for every infant in need. Las Vegas Mission

Beginning August 1, 2010 the Las Vegas Rescue Mission will be renovating the Men’s Overnight Shelter.  The new facility will allow them to more than double their nightly capacity.   The Las Vegas Rescue Mission is excited that through the generosity of our community, they will now be able to provide more than 38,000 nightly beds each year.  In addition to overnight shelter facilities, the Mission provides between 25,000 and 28,000 meals monthly.  For more information, contact the Rescue Mission at  382-1766.

Adopt a Cat

Do you love cats and kittens but don’t want to keep them forever? Do you have an extra room in your home you could share temporarily with a homeless kitty? It is kitten season and there are  lots of kittens and cats that need foster homes. Whether it's a litter of newborn kittens, an abandoned adult kitty, or an adult kitty recovering from a broken heart or broken bones, your love and support can save lives! Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions needs your help! They generally request that foster parents keep and care for the animals until they are ready to be spayed/neutered and prepared for adoption.  Sometimes animals already sterilized will be in need of foster care too, such as those recovering from medical or emotional ailments. Getting involved is easy.. Call them at 533-3440. Come visit them at our two PetSmart Adoption Centers (Craig/MLK and Eastern/Russell) on Saturdays or Sundays for a formal interview, and you'll be on your way to making a difference in the life of a kitty.

Opportunity Village

Opportunity Village, one of southern Nevada’s most celebrated charity organizations, is appealing for new donations in the wake of a devastating fire at its downtown Las Vegas thrift store The thrift store has been such an important part of the organization for the past 56 years. Fire destroyed nearly a third of the Main Street building and the roof partially collapsed..While some of the items inside were salvageable, some decorations for the annual Magical Forest holiday attraction and a set of new furniture from the World Market were destroyed..Donations are being accepted at the Oakey Campus on Oakey Boulevard, between Jones Boulevard and Torrey Pines Drive.More information on donations can be found at the Opportunity Village website or by calling 702-259-3741

Nevada 2-1-1  helps the community through their health and human services help line. Since its inception in Feb. 2006, more than 260,000 people have benefited from this service that connects callers with essential information and referrals

 The mission of 2-1-1 is to provide Nevada citizens access to the following types of services:

  • Basic Human Services: food banks, clothing closets, shelters, rent assistance, and utility assistance.
  • Physical and Mental Health Resources: health insurance programs, Medicaid and Medicare, maternal health, Children’s Health Insurance Program, medical information lines, crisis intervention services, support groups, counseling, drug and alcohol intervention, and rehabilitation.
  • Employment Support Services: financial assistance, job training, transportation assistance, and education programs.
  • Support for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities: adult day care, congregate meals, Meals on Wheels, respite care, home health care, transportation, and homemaker services.
  • Programs for Children, Youth and Families: childcare, after school programs, Head Start, family resource centers, summer camps and recreation programs, mentoring, tutoring, and protective services.
  • Volunteer Opportunities and Donations
  • Support for Community Crisis or Disaster Recovery: 2-1-1 systems in other states have proven valuable in disaster relief efforts in other communities. Nevada 2-1-1’s capabilities in this area will be developed as funding allows.

Nevada Partnership For Homeless Youths

Every Friday from 6pm-9pm Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youths have Feel Good Friday on the Southwest corner of Reno & Maryland Parkway for homeless and neglected youth. Outreach workers and volunteers provide homemade cookies, water, lemonade and iced tea, snack packs and personal hygiene kits while assisting youth in moving to safe and appropriate living arrangements.
